If you've ever owned an iPod with the silver back, you know that these things get scratched by just looking at them the wrong way. The case protects my iPod from those scratches. It's soft, but not too soft, it's not a 'jelly' case. I don't think it would protect it against drops or anything like that, but it does a good job of protecting it from wear and tear.
